BIO

Teaching provides extremely interesting and meaningful opportunities to connect with people. I find joy in teaching English, Psychology, Philosophy, Creative Writing, and Yoga, and I especially relish chances to work on creative projects with students and teachers alike.

Since 2000, I have worked with more than 2,000 students, ranging from AP-focused and Ivy-bound high school students, to foster youth and dropouts earning GEDs, to university students training to become teachers.

In 2020, I completed “Teaching a Practical Philosophy of Mind,” a dissertation that combines elements from each of my previous courses of study in philosophy, creative writing, psychology, and education. In this work, I design, test, and analyze a year-long curriculum system for teaching students to develop and apply metacognition, critical thinking, and creativity.

Living Lexicon is one of the programs that flows from this dissertation and from work on neologism synthesis that students and I have explored since 2015. I am now looking forward to collaborating with creators around the world in the process of concept synthesis in writing and visual arts.

Focus and Flow developed from my resolution to remain in challenging classrooms until I had figured out how to bring extremely difficult classrooms into states of concentration on a consistent basis. We have long struggled as a nation to improve classroom behaviors and academic outcomes; since the pandemic started, this dual challenge has become more complicated.

I have rigorously tested the Focus and Flow program for years in very difficult environments, and I am profoundly excited to share it with teachers, administrators, and counselors who work in some of the hardest classrooms and schools in the nation. Sharing this program feels like a peak of my career and life. I will continue to grow and strengthen this method in collaboration with individuals and communities around the United States.
